Sky Suites and Old Stadium
This project was a full mechanical retrofit that included the old stadium locker room and a remodel for some flexible space, the adjacent Track building, and the 6 story Sky Suites building. The existing 4 pipe system connected to the central steam and chilled water plants were removed along with their associated components and equipment. A new hybrid VRF system was installed. This was one of the first hybrid VRF systems installed in the country and the first in the western United States. It uses water source heat recovery units tied to WSU’s central chilled/condenser water plant. There is refrigerant piped to the branch controllers but then the branch controllers use the refrigerant to heat and cool water loops. That water is then piped to the individual fan coil units throughout the building. This reduces the amount of refrigerant and refrigerant piping in the building but still has the energy efficiency of a VRF system. WHW was the AE Prime designer with an architect, electrical and structural engineering team. This was installed in a relatively short amount of time between football seasons.
